Broadway Goes Car-Free

Yesterday NYC began its experiment to make Times Square safer and more pedestrian-friendly, closing an eight block stretch of Broadway to vehicles. According to a city study, midtown traffic will actually be as much as 20% faster, since drivers no longer have to deal with the way Broadway slices across the city's grid. By all reports, things are working well. The city will soon erect permanent barricades at 7th Avenue and install seating and landscaping along the entire pedestrian area. Purists complain that technically Times Square is now no longer the "Crossroads Of The World", but whatevs.
