Vatican Exorcist: Yoga Turns You Hindu

Former head Vatican exorcist (seriously, there IS such a thing) Father Gabriel Amorth is warning that practicing yoga will turn you into a Hindu. Cuz yoga is from Satan. Who is totally a Hindu. Or something.
"Practicing yoga is Satanic, it leads to evil just like reading Harry Potter,” Father Gabriele Amorth said this week. As for yoga, it leads to Hinduism and “all eastern religions are based on a false belief in reincarnation,” the 86-year-old priest said. “Satan is always hidden and what he most wants is for us not to believe in his existence,” he said. “He studies every one of us and our tendencies towards good and evil, and then he offers temptations.”
Sadly, my Google search for "virgin mary + downward dog" was fruitless, so I had illustrate this post with Father Amorth.

Tony Perkins: Evil Atheists Are Oppressing Our Religious Liberty With Billboards

"Thanksgiving leftovers aren't the only things that get reheated this time of year -- so do the 'Christmas wars,' and with it people's tempers. While you may be chided for saying 'Merry Christmas,' don't lose sight of the many other real threats to religious expression by signing our petition to stand for religious liberty.

"American Atheists, a self described 'premier organization for civil rights,' has announced that they are starting the Christmas wars early this year by putting up their 'You KNOW it's a MYTH' billboards in a handful of states. The most significant threat posed by groups like the American Atheists isn't that they take out billboards or insist on saying 'Happy Holidays.' It's their faithless vision that they want to impose upon our nation. Christmas is but one of many flashpoints in the ongoing struggle to resist those who want to sterilize the public square of any religious expression." - Family Research Council president and KKK affiliate Tony Perkins, via press release.

CDC Launches New HIV Testing Program Aimed At Black Gay & Bisexual Men

Timed to coincide with tomorrow's World AIDS Day, the Centers for Disease Control has launched a new national campaign urging gay and bisexual black men to get tested.
You may already know that gay and bisexual men are the population most affected by HIV in the U.S. Black gay and bisexual men are getting hit particularly hard by the epidemic. Studies in major cities have found that, in those cities, nearly one in three black gay and bisexual men is infected with HIV, and the majority (59%) don’t even know it because they’ve never been tested or aren’t testing enough.
Hit the above link, then check out the rotating images on the home page and ask yourself if we'd ever, in a million years, see such a campaign under a Republican president.

RELATED: Dr. Kevin Fenton is director of the National Center For HIV/AIDS and is the CDC's frontman on the new campaign. You can follow Dr. Fenton's important work and words on Twitter.

BOSTON: Fox News Reporter Outs High School Teacher For Gay Porn Past

A reporter for Boston's Fox News affiliate yesterday ambushed and then outed a local public high school teacher for his second career in gay porn. English department head Kevin Hogan, who reportedly performs under the name Hytch Cawke, has been suspended.
The school released a statement saying. “We value the health and safety of our students,” and that "the school followed our normal hiring practices," which included criminal background checks in Massachusetts and California, where Hogan had been living. Mystic Valley also said "the references we received were flawless,” and noted he was placed there by the recruiting firm Carney, Sandoe & Associates. Hogan even has a testimonial on the firm's website, where he writes, "It's amazing with your help I was able to find a school that I never thought existed." Mystic Valley Charter School sent an e-mail to parents and staff today stressing the school’s insistence that any applicant for a position be candid and forthright about disclosing past employment positions. Parents told FOX Undercover they had some concerns. “I’m disturbed. I’m surprised,” said Stephanie Saponaro, whose son is coached by Hogan on the crew team. “The kids really love him. He's been a great addition to the team. He's a new coach this year. New head of the English department. This is scary.”
What a load of crap. Hogan has done nothing illegal, as even the above-linked assholery from Fox News acknowledges. What Fox IS doing, of course, is attempting to paint yet another gay man as a pedophile. Watch the linked video clip and hang around for the part where the Fox News cast denounces Hogan and says that "no parent would want their kids near him."

UPDATE: Freep the Fox News poll which asks "Should the teacher be allowed to keep his job?"

Christianists To Stage Live Nativity Scene On The Steps Of The U.S. Supreme Court

Rev. Patrick Mahoney (left) and his Christian Defense Coalition will today stage a live nativity scene on the steps of the Supreme Court. Because they're being oppressed. A lot! Via press release:
"Sadly, we are seeing an erosion and hostility toward public expressions of faith in the public square. The is especially true during the Christmas season. The Nativity Project is a reminder that our Constitution provides freedom of religion not freedom from religion. By encouraging people of good will to publicly display Nativity Scenes all across America, we are not only supporting religious liberty and First Amendment freedoms but we are loudly proclaiming the powerful message of Christmas."
Mahoney's group is calling on oppressed Christians to stage similar live nativity scenes at their local court houses.

Is Exodus Shutting Down?

Ex-Gay Watch reports that Orlando-based "ex-gay" self-haters Exodus International is in dire financial straits and just held an emergency "secret" meeting about fundraising.
Exodus President Alan Chambers called a meeting together this past November 16. The subject was quite simply how to keep Exodus International from social and financial oblivion. In attendance were Exodus leadership, prominent religious leaders (such as Gabe Lyons) and lay people. The latter were mostly those who once counted themselves in the ex-gay camp but now are either in the process of changing their views or are fully gay affirming.
The above-linked article speculates that Exodus may be in the process of re-branding itself to something less nasty. You know, one that people would give LOTS of money to.

RELATED: This year several major former figures of the "ex-gay" movement came forward to acknowledge that the entire movement is a scam and that not one person, to their personal knowledge, has ever actually successfully changed their sexual orientation.

TODAY: Occupy Gilead

Today AIDS activists will "occupy" the Foster City, California offices of drug giant Gilead in protest of the high cost of HIV medications. Press release:
In the spirit of the “Occupy” movement, protestors hope to call attention to the severe AIDS drug crisis facing the nation’s ADAPs—a network of federal and state funded programs that provide life-saving HIV treatments to low income, uninsured, and underinsured individuals living with HIV/AIDS nationwide—as well as to the fact that Gilead Sciences’ executives are a part of the “1 percent”. The advocates’ goal is to raise public awareness and educate community members—including Gilead employees—regarding the steep prices that government programs are paying for Gilead’s blockbuster HIV/AIDS drug, Atripla (efavirenz & tenofovir & emtricitabine)—currently $10,000 per patient, per year for ADAP.
The above release also promises: "Protestors will stage a mock funeral in memory of those who have died of AIDS while on AIDS Drug Assistance Program (ADAP) waitlists. Protestors will dress in funeral-black and carry banners and signs with the message: 'Gilead, do the right thing!' as well as a 4 ft. X 2 ½ ft. coffin while wearing skeleton masks."

RELATED: Yesterday European authorities approved Gilead's new all-in-one daily combination pill for HIV therapy. The FDA approved the drug, Complera, back in August. Gilead is dominating the "single daily pill" market as it has a hand in both of the two such pills approved so far.

Quote Of The Day - Judson Phillips

"This statement does nothing to advance the goals of the Tea Party movement and goes a long way towards offending people we need to be involved. Barney Frank is the worst congressman in the last century, but dumb comments like that tweet do not help our cause." - Tea Party Nation president Judson Phillips, responding to a Tennessee Tea Party tweet that said, "Good riddance, you perverted sodomite POS!!!"

RELATED: The Tennessee Equality Project released a statement.
The Tennessee Equality Project condemns the comments made by the Tennessee Tea Party about Congressman Barney Frank. Name-calling and bigotry have no place in our public debates. Americans can disagree without denying one another's humanity. Attacking an accomplished public official based on sexual orientation or gender identity shows the need for an open discussion about discrimination. If adults don't set a good example, we can't expect to address issues like bullying in our schools or discrimination on the job. TEP is ready to have an adult discussion with the people of Tennessee."

"Those of you who won't be -- just work hard -- because you are going to inherit this and you're counting on us to get this right. LOS ANGELES: Gay-Friendly Mom Blogs Objection To Gay Hook-Up Billboard

A Los Angeles mom who describes herself as a gay-friendly, sex-positive feminist is unhappy with the above Manhunt billboard because her son sees it twice a day on his way to school.
You try explaining the “Zero feet away MANHUNT MOBILE” phone application to your 9-year-old son. A 9-year-old who loves Army guys, and so noticed the dog tags right away. It’s not the blatant porn-iness of the over-lit image, or that it is of two men. It would be equally annoying if it were hetero. It’s the fact that I am forced to figure out a way to frame to my fourth-grader the fact that some people like to find causal sex partners fast using their mobile phones. I know some would tell me to use the opportunity for an illuminating conversation. But I don’t need Manhunt Mobile to set my Important Talks Agenda. Our family really could have gone awhile longer without that particular conversation—and should’ve been able to do so.
NOTE: In the category of "no such thing as bad publicity" I should mention that this story was tipped to me by Manhunt's own PR firm.

Russia Denounces U.S. For Criticism Of St. Petersburg's "Don't Say Gay" Bill

A spokesman for the Russian government has denounced the U.S. State Department for a statement made in opposition to St. Petersburg's pending ban on all LGBT-related media and speech.
"We view with bewilderment the American side's attempts to interfere, what's more, publicly, in the lawmaking process," foreign ministry representative for human rights, Konstantin Dolgov, told the Interfax news agency. He dismissed as "inappropriate" comments by the US State Department last week that it was "deeply concerned" by the bill, proposed by the ruling United Russia party at the legislature of the northwestern city of Saint Petersburg. The vaguely worded bill would introduce fines of up to 50,000 rubles ($1,598) for "public acts" promoting homosexuality, lesbianism, bisexuality and transgender identity. Gay activists warn that it could be used to ban any campaign for gay rights.
RELATED: Last night I attended a hastily called and disastrously organized protest at the Russian Consulate on Manhattan's Upper East Side. NEW YORK: Judge Allows Christian Hate Group To Proceed With Marriage Lawsuit

As I've mentioned here before, the Christianist hate group New Yorkers For Constitutional Freedom is suing to overturn same-sex marriage (among other things) on the grounds that legislators were promised campaign donations in return for their vote. (Which is exactly what NOM loudly does at every opportunity.) A state judge has now ruled that the suit may proceed. From NOM's blog:
The Honorable Robert Wiggins, Livingston County Supreme Court Judge, has upheld New Yorkers for Constitutional Freedoms' (NYCF) right to present evidence questioning the legality of the process and procedure whereby same-sex "marriage" became law in New York. The State Attorney General's office filed court papers seeking to dismiss New Yorkers for Constitutional Freedoms v. New York State Senate, the suit brought by NYCF and other plaintiffs that could overturn New York's same-sex "marriage" law, but Judge Wiggins' decision soundly denied that action. Rev. Jason J. McGuire, NYCF's Executive Director and a plaintiff in the suit, said, "I'm grateful that Judge Wiggins carefully weighed the arguments and agreed that this case has sufficient merit to move forward."
RELATED: The case is being argued by Liberty Counsel attorney Rena Lindvaldsen, the author of Only One Mommy, a book that tells the story of an "ex-gay" mom who kidnapped her daughter to Central America in order to defy multiple court orders to share custody with her former partner. The FBI has investigated the Liberty Counsel for their possible complicity in the kidnapping as the child was found to be living in a home owned by the parent of a Liberty Counsel employee.

Bedside Vigil For George Michael's Family

While spokespersons continue to downplay the severity of his condition, the family of George Michael has flown to Austria for what the Telegraph describes as a "bedside vigil."
The singer, who is being treated in hospital in Vienna, Austria, is said to be responding to treatment and "slowly improving". He had been joined by his 75-year-old father Kyriacos Panayiotou, who is known as Jack Panos, as well as sisters Melanie, 49 and Yioda, 53. His former boyfriend, art dealer Kenny Goss, is also due to join the group in the Austrian capital shortly. The 48-year-old star’s boyfriend, hair stylist Fadi Fawaz, has kept a bedside vigil since the singer fell ill on Monday of last week. Fawaz, 38, reportedly appeared tired and drawn as he left the hospital over the weekend. He was accompanied by two women, believed to be Michael’s sisters, one of whom held her head in her hands waiting in the hospital lobby.
Christian activists on Twitter continue to gleefully report on Michael's condition. Some are openly praying for his "death from AIDS." No reliable report has ever been issued on Michael's HIV status.

Chick-fil-A, which trails only Louisville, Ky.-based KFC in market share in the chicken restaurant chain industry, has a long history of guarding its trademark, and the letter listed 30 examples of attempts by others to co-opt the use of the "eat more" phrase that were withdrawn after Chick-fil-A protested. The Oct. 4 letter ordered Muller-Moore to stop using the phrase and turn over his website, eatmorekale.com, to Chick-fil-A.

EL PASO: Judge Allows Recall Vote Over Reinstatement Of Domestic Partners

A Texas judge has ruled that Pastor Tom Brown's recall election against El Paso's mayor may take place. Anti-gay Christian activists are attempting to remove the mayor and two members of the city council for voting to reinstate domestic partners insurance for city employees.
Pastor Tom Brown initiated the recall drive after Cook and council members Susie Byrd and Steve Ortega voted to overturn the limiting of benefits to legal spouses and their children. Brown, who pastors El Paso's Word of Life Church, had led the effort that led to voter approval of those limits last year.Mayor Cook challenged the recall effort, arguing that Brown violated state election law by using church resources to collect signatures for the recall petition. The Alliance Defense Fund is challenging the constitutionality of that law in federal court.
You may recall that when Brown's initial drive to repeal domestic partners succeeded, the poorly written bill also deleted insurance for retired cops and firefighters. That was fine with Brown, as long as those 14 dirty homos didn't get to insure their partners.

CAINWRECK: Is This A Confession?

Herman Cain has yet another accusing woman coming forward. And from his lawyer's statement, it sure seems like Cain is admitting to this one.
"This is not an accusation of harassment in the workplace -- this is not an accusation of an assault -- which are subject matters of legitimate inquiry to a political candidate. Rather, this appears to be an accusation of private, alleged consensual conduct between adults - a subject matter which is not a proper subject of inquiry by the media or the public. No individual, whether a private citizen, a candidate for public office or a public official, should be questioned about his or her private sexual life."

CALIFORNIA: Hate Group Launches Two Campaigns To Thwart Gay History Bill

Unswayed by their failure to gather enough signatures to place a repeal of SB 48 on the November 2012 ballot (despite illegal tactics), a Christianist hate group has launched two new campaigns to thwart the plan to educate school kids about influential LGBT figures from history.

The first new plan, which I told you about earlier this month, attempts to strike the words "gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender" from the bill. The Bay Area Reporter reports that the second plan would allow parents to opt-out of any lessons about LGBT people.

EQCA spokeswoman Rebekah Orr said the new campaign "is likely to be an even uglier effort than their previous one. "It's very specifically targeted at LGBT people. It makes extremely clear what their motivations are," Orr said. Richard Rios, the chair of the Christian Coalition of California, submitted the two anti-gay proposals. In an interview, he said, "It's not a homophobic issue. It's an issue of the requirement of the teaching of something that's contradictory to one's faith." Asked about how teaching the historical contributions of someone like slain gay icon Harvey Milk would contradict someone's religious beliefs, Rios invoked same-sex relationships. He said that in his upbringing, he learned that any relationship other than that between a man and a woman "is not a godly relationship."
RELATED: The above-linked BAR story notes the leadership vacuum currently plaguing Equality California, who some say will be ill-prepared or unable to mount a defense of SB48. Following the departure of their second executive director in several months, EQCA has hired former GLAAD head Joan Garry as its interim leader. A spokesman for EQCA estimates that a defense of SB48 could cost as much as $35M, depending on what resources our enemies can muster.

Focus On The Family's Application

If you want to be selected for Focus On The Family's Leadership Institute, you must sign a pledge which includes the below policy statement.
Homosexuals are entitled to the same basic rights as other citizens. Focus on the Family stands against any movement to rob them of those rights, persecute them, deprive them of employment or housing, or harass them in any way. Nevertheless, Focus does take strong exception to the activist movement that seeks to gain special privileges and protected minority status for the homosexual community. There is no evidence that homosexuals, as a class, are discriminated against in the present society. They are not like African-Americans, Hispanics or other historically disadvantaged groups, for they have a far higher average income than most Americans, a higher level of education than most Americans and significant political influence. Focus on the Family also opposes the efforts of radical homosexual “social reformers” who wish to redefine the family, permit homosexual “marriages,” be able to adopt children and recruit the young.
The same document elaborates on the three instances in which divorce is permitted by Scripture. Interestingly, physical abuse does not appear to be grounds for Jeebus to approve of your divorce.Anyway, read the entire thing (PDF) for a larf.

Barney Frank Retirement Reactions

President Barack Obama
"This country has never had a Congressman like Barney Frank, and the House of Representatives will not be the same without him. For over 30 years, Barney has been a fierce advocate for the people of Massachusetts and Americans everywhere who needed a voice. He has worked tirelessly on behalf of families and businesses and helped make housing more affordable. He has stood up for the rights of LGBT Americans and fought to end discrimination against them. And it is only thanks to his leadership that we were able to pass the most sweeping financial reform in history designed to protect consumers and prevent the kind of excessive risk-taking that led to the financial crisis from ever happening again. Barney's passion and his quick wit will be missed in the halls of Congress, and Michelle and I join the people of the Bay State in thanking him for his years of service."
National Gay & Lesbian Task Force
“Barney Frank is one of kind. He has brought his own brand of brashness, boldness, unmatched wit, discipline and skill to Capitol Hill, at times ingratiating and infuriating friend and foe alike. We thank him for his years of service. As an openly gay member of Congress for nearly a quarter century, Barney Frank has made his mark on history. Yet his legacy is much more than that — for 30 years, he has dedicated himself to bettering the lives of the people he serves, and the country he serves. His voice — often loud and uncompromising — will be missed by many, including me.”
Human Rights Campaign
“Barney Frank has exemplified true leadership over his more than 30 years in the U.S. House of Representatives. As the first openly gay Member of Congress, Barney defied stereotypes and kicked doors open for LGBT Americans. Repeal of ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ and passage of the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act would never have happened without his leadership. But it goes beyond that. His service as chairman of the House Financial Services Committee during a time of great economic upheaval made a gay man one of the most powerful people in the country and he used that power for great good. America, Massachusetts and LGBT people are better off for Barney Frank’s service.”
Freedom To Marry
“As a public servant, Barney Frank has been an inspiration and a giant in an age where we've had few, and losing him as a leader in Congress and in public debate will be a painful blow for the country. Barney's excellence in shaping legislation and unparalleled voice in battling many of the wrong turns the country has taken have made extraordinary contributions to the history of our times. His singular and authentic personality has made politics look good at a time when so many events and electeds have made it look bad. I will miss his leadership, his brilliance, his liberal vision and values, and, of course, his corruscating wit. We need more Barney Franks in public life, not fewer, and fortunately we will always have his indelible example to work from."

Urban Dictionary's Word Of The Day

Over at Urban Dictionary, today's word of the day is "Jeebus." According to some of the posts there, Jeebus predates its current Simpsons-inspired usage. Some say Frank Zappa used it on one of his records and Zappa fan Matt Groening got it there. Others say the term dates back centuries as just one of many words people used to avoid that whole "name in vain" extravaganza. Below is my favorite definition from the above-linked article.

How To Get Arrested In Britain

A British woman riding public transit has been charged with inciting racial hatred after her vicious rant was posted to YouTube.
Police were told about the YouTube video called My Tram Experience, in which a woman with a child on her knee launches a foul-mouthed tirade against her fellow travellers. Swearing repeatedly in the two-and-a-half minute video, she accuses others on the Croydon Tramlink of not being British. Viewers disgusted at her comments brought it to the attention of the British Transport Police.
Here in America, we have no such crime as "racially aggravated public order offence." I'm sure many of you wish we did. I'll admit, it's hard to remain a staunch free speech advocate after watching the below clip.

God Says You Don't Get Saturday Off

"We used to have what was called the Puritan Hard Work Ethic, which - it's really not Puritan - it's a Biblical hard work ethic. The Bible doesn't tell us anything about working five days a week, eight hours a day or less - it says 'six days shalt thou work.' You rest on the seventh, but the command is you're going to work six days. And you'll find that hard working people that work those six days - rural people tend to work longer hours than bankers and lawyers and other and they tend to have less physical problems; they have less burn-out, less stress, less whatever, less high blood-pressure. Folks who work harder and longer tend to do better because God told us to do that; that's the way he kind of made our bodies." - Dominionist and historical revisionist David Barton.

GOProud On Barney Frank's Retirement

You may recall that GOProud supported Frank's 2010 opponent Sean Bielat, who opposed the repeal of DADT, opposed ENDA, and opposed just about every other aspect of civil equality for "average gay people." GOProud also paid for homophobic ads that characterized Barney Frank as "catty" and compared him to one of the Real Housewives.

Mittens Brochure: I Hate Gay Marriage

A just-published brochure from the Romney campaign emphasizes his support for a federal ban on marriage equality. In late summer Romney signed NOM's hate pledge to campaign vigorously against the civil rights guaranteed to to all Americans by the Constitution which he and NOM want to destroy. Over at Think Progress, Igor Volsky details Romney's flip-flops on LGBT rights.
While running for Senate in 1994, Romney argued that same-sex marriage is “a state issue as you know – the authorization of marriage on a same-sex basis falls under state jurisdiction.” He told the Log Cabin Republicans, “We must make equality for gays and lesbians a mainstream concern” and promised to co-sponsor a federal Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA). In fact, during an interview with the Nashua Telegraph just last week, Romney said “I favor gay rights,” adding, “I don’t believe in discriminating in employment or opportunity for gay individuals.”
